In June 1889, shortly after his arrival at an asylum in the southern French town of Saint-Remy, van Gogh painted a riotous study of a flowering hillside. Months later, when he was without fresh canvas he decided to sacrifice the study and painted this view of a ravine near the asylum. After reviewing x-rays of Ravine, conservators and curators have recently revealed the presence of the lost image, Wild Vegetation, behind it.
